Ford Mustang sales hold steady in April
Source: MustangsDaily.com

For the first time this year the Ford Mustang failed to outpace sales from 2011, but overall demand of the pony car remains relatively strong thanks to demand of the new 2013 model. Customers purchased a total of 7,801 Mustangs in the month of April, a 13.8 percent decrease compared to last month (9,046 sales) and a four percent decrease compared to April of last year (8,180 sales). Even so, the Mustang is still on track to beat 2011′s numbers with overall sales for 2012 up 18.4 percent compared to this same time last year (27,934 vs 23,599).

Other Ford models maintained strong sales, with Fusion and Edge setting all-time April sales records and Explorer having best April sales since 2005.

You can see the Ford Mustang’s 2011 and 2012 sales numbers charted below.

I had hoped that the new 2013 Mustang would promote a feeding frenzy not seen since the original S197 debuted.
I want a car so violent that the mere thought of full throttle would cause a heart attack. That actually going wide open throttle in would result in nothing less than instant death!

I am fairly in tune with the car market at least in our area and there are some mixed feelings about the 2013 Stang and it's GT500ish looks. On the other hand I have heard nothing but praise for the actual 2013 GT500 and it hasn't even been released yet.

The same old non updated Camaro finished at 9,627 sales for April compared to 7,801 sales for the 2013 Mustang. I know this press release attempts to gloss over that fact but I am upset that the Mustang is not selling better with this new redesign.

I don't know the market well enough to know anything, but... Sometimes I think that Ford has too many choices and new products coming out.

Look at Apple-Ipad.
The companies make a good product. Keep it until the market is saturated with them then make a decent step forward and repeat.

It is as though people are waiting to buy a mustang because there is always something better coming out. I don't buy a GT500 this year because it will be stomped by next year's model. I didn't buy the 2010 GT because 2011 had the 5.0 engine. I don't buy the 2011 GT because the new front end and tail lights in the 2012 are going to be here in a few months... the list goes on and on.

IMO Ford should have come out with 5.0 in the new body style. and not had a body re-design if they are planning on a complete redesign in 2015.

I can buy a used 2010 camaro that looks like I went to the dealership and picked it up fresh off the assembly line.

Very valid points, and the reason that the 2013 redesign exists in my opinion is simply because Ford could not continue the sales slide for another 2 years. While building Mustangs in an underutilized plant that has been this way since the Mazda 6 left Flat Rock. I think part of the issue is that most think that the 2005-2013 Mustang is the same car as well.

With the way the prices are you and your wife better have pretty darn good jobs too. A new V6 will run you $400.00 a month or more even with excellent credit. The only way we could afford the 2012 Roush RS3 we drive is by getting a very favorable interest rate and I still pay over 1K a month. Young folks can't even begin to think about buying any of these new performance cars unless their parents are rich. A stripped Mustang GT is well over 30K now and add a few desired options and you are at 40K for a GT and max it out and you are in the mid 40K range. A new ZL1 Camaro will be 55K or more even without the "added value" from the dealers and what do you think one of the new GT500s will cost once the dealers finish marking them up ? Can you say 70K+ ? The same can be said for the SRT-8 Dodge Challengers although they no longer have any dealer mark-up but are still 50K. Who is buying all these ultra high priced performance cars with the economy the way it is ?

I hear ya.

I don't know much, but are the cars really that expensive to produce?

With unions, yes. Without ?

The unions had a time and place for ensuring a honest days pay for a honest days work, but like everything else, the concept was corrupted overtime and has now become another crutch for a sometimes entitled and ungrateful work force.

It's a double edged problem. We wouldn't buy an American car made abroad, but we can't afford the cars built here - especially when an arguably higher quality car with better value could be had for less. As consumers we want our cake and to eat it too, but the same people demanding a quality American made car are also unwilling to build these cars at a rate that allows then to be priced competitively. This is pretty much true of nearly all US manufactured products now.

We are our own worst enemies.

How bad will things have to get before we are truly appreciative to have a job here, feel obligated to do that job to the best of our abilities and have pride in helping build a quality & affordable American made product?

End rant ;)

Bossman I definitely agree with yours , and mrmax390's post. The fact is the Mustang has a direct competitior which is a worse car in many ways, and more expensive that continues to outsell the Mustang despite this economy or the unions. It is not often that a competitors product is rated by many as lower, and has less loyal customers that sells for more and in higher volume. There is a definite problem here, and I think it is a marketing lead problem. I sincerely think that in some ways the Mustang has been too familiar to many as far as looks go, and that the marketing of this car could definitely be done different in some ways.

I think part of the reason new camaros sell a bit better is there isnt any 03 and up used camaros to buy before the current body style.....Sometimes  hard to justify a new mustang when you can buy 5000 mile 07 09 gt500s in the 30 grand range low mile termis  in low 20s

GM's sales are a product of cultural engineering. If I buy a Camaro, I will be immediately interesting, Megan Fox will be my girlfriend and I will be a hero to everyone in the world under 17 because I drive Bumblebee. Yuck !!!

Remember the "Bold Moves" campaign? Why doesn't Ford advertised the Mustang like they actually have a pair.

The new ads are all about the stupid customizer. Who cares if you can Photoshop a metallic lavender GT500 with tribal tattoos - Who would buy or actually build that junk?

I've always thought the easiest cars in the world to market were "muscle cars."

It's right there in the name. People don't buy Mustangs to compete in hyper-miling contests. We are not sold on 17 year warranties or free oil changes for life. We rev our engines, race from light to light, make smokey burnouts & donuts and rejoice in our modern, high horsepower mix of sophistication & redneckery.

I love the ads from the late 60's and early 70's. You and a gaggle of bikini clad friends are enjoying a picnic at the beach, when a volcano erupts and from the bowels of hell emerges the new ____________. The beastly car is shrouded in smoke and all you can heard is the revving of a nasty V8 engine. The camera pans to a front view of the car, where you've somehow magically transported into the drivers seat. Iron Butterfly's "Inagodadavida" is playing - tires spin, more smoke and you and the new ___________ quickly vanish into the horizon as the bellowing sound of the V8 is heard echoing in the distance.

When did we decide to neuter the image and experience that is the "muscle car"?

They need to quit having design agencies full of Prius driving prissies making ads for cars they don't understand and don't appreciate.

Bossman that is exactly what I am talking about, and I think they need to spend more time doing the kind of events like Team Shelby recently did with the 2013 Mustang GT500. They need to understand better the car culture, and the demographic of actual Mustang owners and people that aspire to own a Mustang one day. When your competitor is eating your lunch with a car that many rate as much worse and charging more for them to sell more of them then its time to put the marketing department on notice.

Amen to all of this. My sister in-law owns her own night club and already had a new 2008 GT500 vert when the Camaro came out. She just had to have one the first day they were available for purchase. She paid 15K over sticker just for this privilege. I drove her SS2 Camaro the day she got it and at first it was kinda cool but after the second or third drive I started noticing a bunch of things I did not like and still do not like to this day. You can't see out of them for one thing and the trunk is nothing more than a hole in the back of the car and is more or less useless. I convinced her to part with the Camaro after about a year or so and keep the GT500 which she still owns. Why on earth would someone want one of these over the Mustang is beyond me. My wife and I are on our 10th Mustang and we wouldn't have any other "Muscle Car"  but if we did it would be a Challenger and not a Camaro. I don't consider the CTS-V a Muscle Car per say as it is at least as much luxury as it is performance but we would own one of those for sure.
