Ford Claims Cobra Jet the Fastest Accelerating Production Car Ever
Chris Demorro / StangTV

Automakers are known to throw some pretty swanky soirees for a variety of reasons; launching a new car model, the Detroit Auto Show, or some kind of motorsports victory. While the 2012 Ford Mustang Cobra Jet isn’t exactly a “new” car, there is good reason for Ford to celebrate the delivery of these special drag racers.

And while Autoblog was invited to the party, our invitations seem to have gotten lost in the mail. The venerable AB does say that Ford maintains that this Cobra Jet is the fastest accelerating production car ever. Ever ever?

That’s a pretty bold claim, but there’s got to be some truth to it. The already-sold-out 2012 Cobra Jet comes with a 5.4 liter all-aluminum engine in two flavors; 425 horsepower and 500 horsepower. In the lightened, race-ready chassis, this is good for a 10-second quarter-mile time and a 60-ft of just 1.3 seconds. Ford wouldn’t say what the 0-60 time is, but its got to be damn quick. Costing between $91,990 and almost $104,000, it’s the most expensive vehicle with a Blue Oval badge by a wide, wide margin.

Of course, the cost to build such a car yourself would easily run over $100,000. With the 4.0 liter supercharger option, the Cobra Jet will even do the quarter-mile in the single digits. In a car straight from Ford’s factory. How many other automakers can make that kind of claim? Not too many, that’s for sure. Maybe next time, Ford will send us an e-vite to the party instead. We’d love to take a few trips down the drag strip.

I really would have to see a 0-60 time to believe that it is the fastest accelerating production car ever.  Faster than a Bugatti Veyron's 2.5 second 0-60 time?  That is a tall order, but if it can run a 10 second 1/4 mile, it's right up there with the Veyron.  No doubt that this is one epically quick car.

Yea i'd like to see it go up against the veyron but the 4WD veyron may have the advantage. Need to see the 0-60 time but its definitely a badass car!!!!!!!

First lets not compare a million dollar car to a 100k car. And also heres the proof the Veyron WILL NOT beat the CJ and the Veyron is in deed slower, in the 1/4 mile. The new CJ with the 4.0l SC runs the 1320 deep into the 9s while some say they seem high 8s. The slow Veyron runs the 1/4-mile: 10.8 sec @ 140 mph. Heres a link to the Veyron specs, keep in mind the Veyron is a million dollar car and built for top speed as the CJ is built for top 1/4 mile speeds and times.

I know it isn't a good comparo overall, but I brought it up because the Veyron is (or was) the fastest production car from 0-60.  Just to put it into perspective and show just how fast the "fastest accelerating production car ever" really is.

No offense to anyone in this thread, but the term production car is used by Ford in an extremely misleading way. The Cobra Jet is not a production car by the usual use of the term since it is not street legal nor can it be titled for street use. This is like saying the Boss 302R is the best handling production Mustang ever. Well no kidding its a purpose built race car thats not street legal.
I want a car so violent that the mere thought of full throttle would cause a heart attack. That actually going wide open throttle in would result in nothing less than instant death!

^ ah, well then I have indeed been mislead.  In that case, disregard what I said about comparing it to a Veyron's 0-60 time haha  Thank you for clearing up the issue.

As of right now the Veyron Super Sport  is the fastest production car, by official measurements. There are cars such as the SSC Ultimate Aero and Koenigsegg Agera that have a higher power to weight ratio but there problem is putting the power down with RWD.

It's definitely a bit of a trade-off with 4WD and RWD.  You can get the power down more effectively with a 4WD, especially on a car with as much power as a Veyron, but you can generally have a bit more fun with a RWD with power-sliding and such.  But, I seem to have strayed from the original topic a bit...I can't wait for Ford to give us a 0-60 time for the CJ!

Its sub 2.0 seconds 0-60 I would imagine or maybe low 2's. The Lingenfelter TT Vette that ran 9.2 @ 150 mph clocked a 1.97 second 0-60 time.
